TSC 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has invited teachers and school administrators across Kenya to nominate outstanding educators for the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards, with the submission deadline set for 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The annual awards provide an opportunity for the teaching profession to celebrate educators who have gone beyond their routine responsibilities to make a measurable difference in the lives of learners, schools and communities.

According to the award guidelines, TSC will recognise teachers and institutional administrators who have demonstrated exceptional performance in areas such as teaching, leadership, innovation, learner support, mentorship, inclusion and community impact. The commission says nominations will be evaluated using standardised criteria designed specifically for the different award categories.

The successful national awardees are expected to be recognised during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 5, 2026. However, while the date of the celebrations has been confirmed, an official exact starting time for the ceremony has not been publicly established in the information currently available.

TSC 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards categories

The 2026 awards cover a broad range of areas intended to recognise different forms of excellence within Kenya’s education sector.

Among the categories are Lifetime Achievement, Early Years Educator, Sustainable Development Educator, Early Career Educator and School Leadership Excellence.

Other categories include Inclusive Educator, Child Protection Champion, Co-curricular and Talent Development, Teacher Mentor, and Innovation and ICT Integration in Teaching.

The commission will also recognise outstanding educators under categories such as Most Resilient Teacher, National Honours and International Recognition.

The wide range of categories means teachers can be recognised not only for classroom performance but also for contributions in areas such as technology integration, talent development, mentorship, learner protection and support for vulnerable learners.

What TSC will consider when selecting nominees

Being nominated does not automatically guarantee an award. TSC says each nomination must meet the eligibility requirements for the relevant category and be supported by evidence demonstrating the nominee’s achievements and contribution.

The commission will consider several factors, including the nominee’s contribution to teaching and learning, measurable results, innovation and creativity, inclusivity and responsiveness to learner needs.

Another important consideration is whether an initiative or practice developed by the nominee can be replicated or adopted in other schools.

This means teachers seeking recognition should not simply list their responsibilities. Strong nominations should demonstrate what the teacher has achieved, how learners or the wider school community benefited, and, where possible, provide measurable evidence of the results.

For example, a teacher involved in ICT integration could demonstrate how technology improved learner participation or academic performance. Similarly, a mentor could provide evidence of how their guidance helped colleagues improve classroom practice or professional performance.

Teachers can nominate themselves

TSC has also provided an opportunity for educators to put themselves forward for recognition.

A teacher is allowed to submit a self-nomination in a maximum of two categories. Colleagues and heads of institutions can also nominate teachers, subject to the prescribed limits.

The nomination process is therefore not restricted to school administrators. Teachers who believe their work has made a significant impact can also seek recognition directly, provided they meet the requirements and submit the necessary supporting evidence.

This is particularly important for educators whose contributions may not always receive public attention but who have introduced successful initiatives within their schools or communities.

How the TSC award selection process will work

After the August 26 deadline, TSC will begin processing the nominations.

The commission will first conduct eligibility checks to establish whether submissions meet the requirements of the respective award categories.

Eligible nominations will then move through several levels of assessment. The selection process will involve sub-county, county and regional panels, which will apply evidence-based criteria when evaluating candidates.

At the sub-county and county levels, panels will identify the top three nominees in each category.

The regional stage will then select five nominees before forwarding the best three for consideration at the national level. This multi-stage process is intended to ensure that outstanding teachers from different parts of the country have an opportunity to compete for national recognition.

The structure also means teachers should ensure that their nomination documents clearly demonstrate their achievements rather than relying on general descriptions of their teaching duties.

Why the awards matter to Kenyan teachers

Recognition programmes such as the World Teachers’ Day Awards can play an important role in motivating educators and highlighting innovative practices within schools.

Teachers are central to the implementation of curriculum reforms, learner assessment, talent development and the use of technology in education. Recognising their achievements can also help draw attention to approaches that could be adopted by other schools.

For teachers working under the Competency-Based Education and Competency-Based Curriculum environment, areas such as learner-centred teaching, digital learning, inclusion, creativity, mentorship and talent development are increasingly important.

The awards therefore provide an opportunity to showcase educators who are responding effectively to changing demands in the education sector.

TSC deadline for 2026 teacher awards

Teachers and other eligible nominators should take note of the strict deadline.

TSC has set Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 11:00 p.m. as the closing time for nominations. Submissions made after the deadline may not be considered.

After the nomination and evaluation stages, the final national awardees are expected to be recognised during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 5, 2026. Current public information confirms the celebration date but does not provide a verified exact starting time for the ceremony.

Teachers intending to participate should therefore ensure that they carefully review the requirements for their preferred category and provide credible evidence supporting their nomination.

TSC Wajibika Award also targets outstanding teachers

The World Teachers’ Day awards come several months after TSC launched another teacher recognition initiative.

In May 2026, the commission invited nominations for the inaugural Wajibika Award, which seeks to recognise 300 teachers from across Kenya.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to acknowledge teachers who demonstrate commitment, responsibility and exceptional service in the education sector. However, at the time of the latest reports on the World Teachers’ Day Awards, TSC had not issued a further public update on the outcome or progress of the Wajibika Award nominations.

The two recognition initiatives underline the growing focus on celebrating teachers whose work produces tangible results in schools and communities.

For educators planning to submit nominations for the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards, the most important step is to provide clear evidence of impact, innovation and service. With the deadline approaching, teachers should avoid waiting until the final hours to prepare their submissions.
